Never-Fading Memories

It was the early 2000s in Kerala, a time when life moved at a slower pace, and dreams were woven with simplicity and hope. Nishanth, a middle-class boy from a small town, had just secured admission to a government college for his graduation. For Nishanth, this was not just a step toward higher education but also a gateway to a world of new experiences, friendships, and possibilities.

The campus was vibrant, filled with students from diverse backgrounds. Nishanth, with his humble demeanor and quiet confidence, quickly made friends—both boys and girls. Among them was Reshma, a girl with a radiant smile and a kind heart. She was one of his classmates, and though they didn’t interact much in the beginning, Nishanth couldn’t help but notice her warmth and sincerity.

The first year of college flew by in a blur of lectures, assignments, and campus festivities. Nishanth enjoyed every moment, but it was during the exam season that he first felt a subtle shift in his relationship with Reshma. She would often ask him if he needed help with his studies, share her notes, and even bring him snacks during the long study sessions. Her care and attention didn’t go unnoticed. Nishanth began to look forward to her presence, and soon, he realized that he couldn’t imagine his days without her.

The following year, their bond grew stronger. They started spending more time together—studying in the library, sharing meals in the canteen, and even going on short trips with their group of friends. During one such trip, as they sat by the beach watching the sunset, Nishanth felt a strange yet beautiful connection with Reshma. He noticed how she smiled at his jokes, how her eyes lit up when she talked to him, and how she always seemed to find a way to be near him. It was then that he realized she, too, enjoyed his company as much as he enjoyed hers.

Their friendship deepened, and soon, they began visiting each other’s homes. In those days, mobile phones were a luxury, so they relied on landlines to stay in touch. Nishanth would eagerly wait for her calls, and Reshma would do the same. Their families, though unaware of the growing bond between them, welcomed their friendship warmly.

One of the most memorable moments of their college life was the Onam vacation. As the festival approached, the thought of being away from each other for days made them both uneasy. They spent the last day before the vacation together, talking and laughing, trying to make the most of the time they had. When they finally parted ways, Nishanth felt a strange emptiness, as if a part of him had stayed behind with her.

Back at home, Nishanth began documenting his days in a diary. He wrote about the little moments they shared—the color of her dress, the way she tied her hair, the jokes they laughed at, and the quiet walks they took together. Writing became his way of reliving those precious moments, and soon, his diary was filled with memories of Reshma.

One evening, she called. Her voice was soft but filled with warmth.

Reshma: Nishanth, what are you doing?
Nishanth: Nothing... what can I do without seeing you?

They talked for hours, sharing stories about their families, the Onam sadya, and how much they missed each other. Nishanth realized that he couldn’t imagine a day without her.

Their bond only grew stronger as the years passed. During the final year of college, they went on a tour with their classmates. It was a time of joy, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Every evening, Nishanth would walk Reshma to the bus stop, and they would talk about their dreams, fears, and hopes for the future. He began to notice the smallest details about her—the way she held her bag, the way her eyes sparkled in the sunlight, and the way she always seemed to know what to say to make him feel better.

One day, Reshma invited Nishanth to her home for her sister’s wedding. Nishanth was nervous but excited. He dressed carefully and arrived at her house, where he was greeted warmly by her family. Seeing Reshma in a traditional saree, helping with the wedding preparations, made his heart swell with happiness.

Reshma: Nishanth, why are you looking at me like that?

Nishanth: Nothing... you look very beautiful today.

Reshma blushed, and they shared a quiet moment amidst the wedding chaos.

Their relationship, though unspoken, was deep and profound. They supported each other through thick and thin, especially during exams. Reshma would often help Nishanth with his studies, and her encouragement played a significant role in his academic success. When the results were announced, both of them had scored high marks, a testament to their hard work and mutual support.

But as graduation approached, the question of “what next?” loomed large. They explored various options to continue studying together. Nishanth even got selected for a prestigious postgraduate program, one of his dream courses. However, when he realized that Reshma wouldn’t be joining him, he decided not to go. Instead, they enrolled in a technical course together, determined to stay by each other’s side.

Life during the technical course was challenging. Nishanth took up part-time jobs to support himself, and his schedule was often hectic. But no matter how busy he was, he always found time for Reshma. They would walk together after classes, exploring the town, sharing their dreams, and simply enjoying each other’s company.

Their relationship had grown deeper over the years, but neither of them had ever spoken about their feelings. It was a love that didn’t need words—it was in the way they cared for each other, the way they supported each other, and the way they couldn’t imagine life apart.

One evening, as they walked through the town, Nishanth finally gathered the courage to speak.

Nishanth: Reshma, how many years have we been walking together like this?
Reshma: I don’t know... but there’s not a single day in my life without you.

They stopped walking and looked at each other. In that moment, words were unnecessary. Their love was in the silence, in the unspoken promises, and in the years they had spent together.

However, their journey was not without its hurdles. During the final months of the course, Nishanth landed a job through campus recruitment. While it was a significant achievement, it meant he would have to spend less time with Reshma. She was heartbroken, and so was he. The job felt meaningless without her presence, and after much contemplation, Nishanth decided to quit and return to the course. It was a bold decision, but for him, Reshma was worth it.

Just when they thought they could finally breathe easy, Reshma’s family announced her marriage. She was devastated and begged Nishanth to take her away. But Nishanth was torn. His family was going through financial difficulties, and he felt responsible for them. After much deliberation, he decided to prioritize his family over his love for Reshma. It was a painful decision, and when he conveyed it to her, she accepted it with a heavy heart.

Reshma’s engagement was finalized, and Nishanth tried to distance himself from her. He stopped answering her calls, hoping it would make things easier for both of them. But the distance only made his heart ache more. He couldn’t focus on anything, and his mother often asked him why he seemed so upset. But how could he explain the depth of his pain?

In the midst of his turmoil, Nishanth received a job offer in another country. Seeing it as an escape, he accepted it and left immediately. Reshma, meanwhile, resisted her marriage, unable to go through with it. A year passed without any communication between them, but Nishanth couldn’t forget her. He lived in the memories of their time together, often flipping through his diary and reminiscing about the days they had shared.

When Nishanth returned to his hometown after a year, he was surprised to learn that Reshma was still waiting for him. Overwhelmed with emotion, he went to her house, only to be met with resistance from her family. They were unwilling to accept their relationship due to religious differences.

Determined to be with her, Nishanth came up with a plan. He asked Reshma to apply for a passport, and once she had it, they went to the sub-registrar’s office and got married. It was a quiet ceremony, but it marked the beginning of their new life together. The very next day, they flew to the country where Nishanth worked, where his friends had made all the necessary arrangements for their stay.

And so, Nishanth and Reshma began their journey as husband and wife, leaving behind the struggles and uncertainties of their past. Their love, which had endured so many challenges, finally found its rightful place. Together, they built a life filled with love, trust, and endless possibilities, proving that true love knows no boundaries.

Years later, Nishanth would open his old diary and smile at the memories. The colors of Reshma’s dresses, the notes about their walks, and the moments they shared—it was all there, preserved in ink.

Their love story wasn’t grand or dramatic. It was simple, pure, and built on the little moments that made life beautiful. And in those moments, they found forever.
